More and more people are concerned about self defense. It has been estimated that some fifteen million Americans now carry a can of pepper spray to use for self defense. We hope that most of those purchased cans never have to be sprayed. One of the problems that many owners of pepper spray face is that they do not have proper pepper spray training to effectively use the weapon.
For any self defense weapon to be useful, you must be trained in using that weapon. The time to learn how to remove the safety cap and spray your pepper spray is not when you are being attacked. If the nozzle is pointed in the wrong direction, you will spray yourself. Pepper spray training will prepare you in case the worst ever happens. Some pepper spray manufacturers offer a training spray container filled with water. If your manufacturer does not offer the training can, then buy two identical cans of pepper spray so that you can use one for a training can and one to carry for self defense. Once a can has been used for training, do not depend on it for self defence, it may run out of spray. One suggested method of training is to go outside and tape a piece of paper at about head height to a tree. Use the water can or the extra can of pepper spray to practice opening the container and spraying the paper attacker. Initially you are not trying for speed, but for accuracy. The container needs to be held firmly. the fingers and the thumb can be used to open the cap. Put the thumb or trigger finger on the activation button to release the spray. Continue practicing until you can smoothly open the pepper spray container and spray. Each time you spray, take a step back and to the side. Do not walk toward the target. The spray will get into your eyes. The step back and aside moves you out of the way of your attacker.
